Wazzaaap!

I'm getting ready to hit the south island of NZ this week for two shows... I'm playing the
End of Season Party at Steel Worx in Methven with King Kapisi on Thursday the 9th.  Kaps is a legend in NZ hip hop, it's gonna be an honour to do a show with him down home... as long as I can move by then... two on two ball and a dunking comp with him and his sons just about killed me the other day!

Then Saturday the 11th I'm playing with DJ Kid 90 from CHCH in support of Blackalicious.. this is gonna be mean!  NZ get's a lot of internationals these days but these guys are not the usual (Kylie, Ice Cube, Snoop etc).. they are one of the most respected b-boy-turntable-mc crews in the game and I actually just can't wait to see their show!!

So, that's next week... in the meantime we're gettin ready to release my second single LOTALUV out here in NZ.  The video is being cut right now.. check it out on
Vix blog ... if all goes well we should have a November release, just in time for the beginning of summer out here in Aotearoa, nz.

Thanks for stoppin in!

One love & light, m

SEPTEMBER 16th:

KIA ORA!

Kilotone and I went to the Silver Scroll Awards on Wednesday, great nite with some awesome performances by some brilliant NZ artists.  Our song WAITAHA was nominated for MAIOHA: Contemporary Maori Song Writing Award... we didn't win it but were really stoked to be nominated, great to get that kind of recognition from your peers and a really good start for 'close to home' out here in NZ.

Thank you to everyone who has voted so tirelessly for WAITAHA at radio!  It was in the charts for 9 weeks out here and has been on the paid download Top 13 for three months!!!  Feel free to grab a copy and keep it in the charts!

Also, if you haven't checked him out yet, please drop by my man cubworld's new profile... he's just signed up for his second SAB album which I predict will be the proverbial shizz!!!  Get yo parts!!!

Have a great week and thanks for dropping by...

CHur To Da CHur!!!

Kia Ora everyone, I want to write and say thank you to everyone who was involved in both the both video shoots and the live show at Club Cixi. This last week and half in Hong Kong has been incredibly rewarding, so many wicked people were involved and everyone went way above and beyond, I don't think there is any doubt that Digger and Victor are gonna produce something extremely… DOPE!!!  Chur to da Chur!  Is that enuf pressure Victor! Haha!

LOTALUV

From the 40 degree heat at Oil Street to the thousands of shocked / smitten Mon Kokers showing a LOTALUV to our flight attendant / beauty queen / kung fu master / village people / mElvis / exotic dancing / pimp cast, it was a looooong, hot, sweaty but hugely fulfilling day!  Thank you to Roman and his camera crew, the breakers & boarders, drivers & dancers, make up and of course Dig Deep Entertainment … there was a LOTALUV all day long. The concept of the video was one long spinning shot of an array of mad characters that make up this world and give us the diversity that makes life what it is… I can't wait to see it cos "There'a Lotaluv" but "I guess we'll have to wait"!

CHUR TO THE CHUR

Club Cixi was the scene of the crime… even after 15 play backs of the same song the crowd of beautiful, honourary Christchurch-ians were still screaming CHRISTCHURCH and KA MATE like Peter Jackson was calling action!  I wanna thank the camera crew and everyone who put this day together… and thank you to air conditioning, it felt like all our xmas's had come at once after Mon Kok. Thank you to Ky, my 7 foot body guard for keeping the boys off the stage during LOTALUV!  And a special thank you to my friend Gretchell Yaneza for her dedication and brilliant performance, you brought a really special element to the live show.  Thank you to DJ Tee for holding us down on the one's and two's and the primo tunes afterwards… thank you to everyone who came along and partied with us, it was a wicked night and I'm already scheming my way to get back there for another show!

I want to say that the week was saddened by the loss of our friendSand on Monday night… we will all miss you bro and pray that you smile down on us as we dedicate our work this week to you.  Rest In Peace brother, we love you…

Love & Light, maitreya

"
Luctor et Emergo"

Kia Ora!

This is the first blog I've written for a bit…  I pretty much haven't stopped since I finished the album, things only really got busier here, it's just a different kind of busy.  I'm in NZ to release my album single by single, the album should come out around OCTOBER but in order for it to sell more than two copies I need radio play and video play.  I also need press, that almost seems easier than radio play, I think its cos there are a million bands here vying for play but not that many with good PR.  Do I have good PR?  I don't know yet??  I've got some things in place, to try and maximize the exposure, lots of press kits and postcards and press copies of the album going to all the 'right' people.  I'm organizing some huge events that may or may not happen depending on the willingness of the moneyed to be involved… I'm also booking a national tour for July which I'm hoping will give me some live presence here again.

I'm at a point with this industry where I need some big things to go my way.  I've got the best music I've ever written, the coolest fans and whole lot of energy and determination but at the end of the day its gonna take some luck and lots more hard work to actually become self-sufficient from this.  That might sound slightly strange but truly that's what I want.  "I got a dream to be comfortable" literally means I want to be able to pay for food and rent off of my music, that would be success for me.  I don't give a shit about fame and fortune, the only possible good I can see out of widespread fame is bringing attention to injustices in this world and promoting positive and
sustainable solutions to them.  Now, more than ever we need people who are willing to stand up for what they believe in no matter the consequences.  This is a time when you can be a cheesy dickhead or a conscious leader of new thought, the choice is yours and either way you can make it work but only you will know if you are being true.

"Music is spiritual, the music industry is not" or something like that.  I think that's important to hold onto.  It's really easy to let the negativity and constant walls and hula-hoops of this industry put a hurting on your outlook.  I have Cat Stevens moments where I'm like, "man I'm just gonna go and meditate for 10 years and wash away all
this music 'business' bullshit."  Your art is so personal that when the industry starts throwing up barriers it can become madness.  How do I deal with it?  Sometimes I don't.  I went for a run yesterday around Herne bay in Auckland which is a really posh part of town, all these huge houses and beautiful harbour views… but I was also a block from where one of my sisters pupils got stabbed to death a few months ago… hmmmm, starts to put things back in perspective.  This industry is just another hustle… sad but true.  There are more important things in life than the music business and I gotta keep reminding myself that.  My mate Sloppy just had two friends pass away in the last month... that's reality… I just get so passionate about my music and getting it out there that it can become all-consuming.

But what it all boils down to is drive, talent and luck.  I think I have been given a fair dose of all three lately.  Sometimes I feel like my luck is not equal to my drive but I think every person on this earth feels that way once in a while, some every waking moment.  I don't feel that way, I've already had shit loads of luck this year... and when I think about my day to day life, I think I have more luck and good fortune than most... so, I'm grateful for that… only thing is… I want that kind of luck where by I have a number one album!!

Luctor et Emergo… (Thanks DK!)
